Hey you, I can only imagine what you are going through. How you are feeling. You probably spend most of your time crying and wondering if your current situation will ever get better. When others see you, you’re smiling, but on the inside, you’re hurting. Hoping, wishing, and praying that someone would look at you. That someone could look past that fake smile and see that you’re not okay. You need a hug, a kind word, anything! You just need help!
Okay, so you know all those feelings that you’re having right now? All those desires like, “If only someone could read my mind and help me”. Well, there is someone like that! Someone that is greater than your situation! Someone who can look right into your heart and begin to heal you of all your wounds. That someone is Jesus! Yes, Jesus! You are His priority and He doesn’t want to see you hurting.
So when you’re sad. When you’re feeling down. When you feel like you have no one, remember these Bible verses below. See what God says about you, and let me tell you, you will never be the same again!
You are not alone, you are not rejected or abandoned. You have the creator of the entire universe on your side! And He loves you very much!
Alright, that’s enough talking. Let’s dive in and see the 10 Bible Verses to read when you’re sad.
1. Psalms 34:18 – “The Lord is close to the Brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.”
Oooh, I know you are hurting. I know you have times when you are in so much pain you can’t bear it. Times when you feel alone, like no one cares about you or loves you, but let me tell you something. You are loved! Much more than you can ever think or imagine, YOU ARE LOVED! You are God’s concern, the thought on His mind daily. He cares about you and is concerned about everything pertaining to you. When you feel alone and broken, just know that the Lord is close to you. And not only is He close to you, He is working in you, and healing you. He is mending your broken heart and saving your crushed spirit.
2. Psalms 147:3 – “He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.”
The Lord is your healer, it is literally in his name. We call him Jehovah Rapha, which means “the Lord who heals.”
3. Psalms 73:26 – “My flesh and heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and portion forever.”
Everything around you will change. People will come and go in your life. You might know the famous quote that says, “The only constant is change”. This is true about everything else but God. Yes, seasons in your life will change but God is and will always remain the same. And oh how He loves you so! So, when you’re weak and you don’t know what to do, run to the Father and ask Him to be your strength and He will do just that and more!
4. Matthew 5:4 – “Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.”
How sweet is it to know that when you mourn you will be comforted. You know the Bible says that God wipes your tears when you cry? Yes, He is there with you in every moment. The times when you are alone in your room crying, He is there. He is always with you and He will comfort you. Be completely honest and transparent with God. Cry out “Abba I need you” and He will wrap you in His warm embrace.
5. Psalm 30:5 – “For his anger lasts only a moment, but his favor lasts a lifetime; weeping may stay for the night, but rejoicing comes in the morning.”
This is a guarantee that if you are sad right now, even as you are reading it, if you’re in pain and in tears just know that God is telling you that this sadness is not going to last. God is going to come in like a flood and turn your weeping into dancing. Wipe your tears, look at God, and know that you are not alone.
6. Psalm 34:17 – “The righteous cry out, and the Lord hears them; he delivers them from all their troubles.”
Cry out to God! Do not keep your sadness in, do not lock yourself away with your thoughts. You are a child of God, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, an heir to the throne. You have the ability to talk to God. Do you recognize how amazing that is?! Like literally the creator of the heavens and earth is waiting for you to talk to him. When you’re sad sometimes you don’t even have the words to speak. You might not feel comfortable talking to others because you’re scared they might judge you or think you don’t make any sense, but God isn’t like that. He wants to hear you, completely unfiltered, as raw and broken as you are. He doesn’t want you to pretend you’re okay, he wants you to transparently go before him and say, “Daddy, I’m broken. I can’t do this without you. I’m hurting, I’m in trouble, I don’t have the strength to go on by myself.” And like the loving father that He is, He will hear you, He will deliver you and He will heal you. No one in this world will understand you like God does, so go to Him first and let Him work in you. God says He will deliver you, believe that because He is not a man that He should lie.
7. Psalms 42:11 – “Why, my soul, are you downcast? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God.”
Speak life into yourself! The Bible tells us in Proverbs 18:21 that life and death are in the power of the tongue, so what you say is very important. When you are sad, anxious, or disturbed you have a choice. You can choose to sulk and stay in your misery, or you can fight that sadness and choose not to accept it. You can speak to your sadness and cast it out! In this scripture, David spoke to his soul and told his soul to put his hope in God. You need to speak life into yourself. When you are sad, you need to tell yourself that God is good and you will trust Him. And I’m not telling you that this will be an instant change, that as soon as you say this all sadness in your life will disappear. No. But what will happen is that you will begin to feed your spirit with truth, your mind will begin to believe what you are professing with your mouth. Gradually you will indeed be healing and receiving that joy, so that in the future if sadness ever tries to creep its ugly head up again, you can speak life and praise God. Then, in an instant, the sadness will be destroyed because you programmed your soul to know this method.
8. Matthew 11:28-30 NIV – “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”
You are never meant to carry your burdens alone. I looked up an image of a yoke and I was shocked. So a yoke is a wooden beam and is wrapped around the neck of two animals. The Lord is telling you here to leave your weight to Him, to give Him your shackles and shame and pain. I know you’re sad, give it to God and He will give your heart immense rest and peace.
9. Psalms 55:22 NIV – “Cast your cares on the Lord and he will sustain you; he will never let the righteous be shaken.”
When God says He will never let you be shaken, He means He will never let you be shaken. It’s really that simple! You are legit so precious to God that He commands angels to guard you, and they lift up their hands so that you won’t strike your foot against a stone. (refer to Psalm 91:11-12) Even though you can’t see it, you have an army of angels protecting you. I don’t know about you but knowing I have angels preventing me from striking my foot on a stone gives me a boost of confidence. I have a little pep in my step knowing that God’s got my back. I’m here to tell you that God has got your back! He’s got you, He will not let you be shaken. You will be like a tree planted by the riverside, you will not be moved. The Lord is your firm foundation and in Him nothing, and I mean nothing can shake you. Believe it!
10. Psalms 55:16-18 NIV – “As for me, I call to God, and the Lord saves me. Evening, morning and noon I cry out in distress, and he hears my voice. He rescues me unharmed from the battle waged against me, even though many oppose me.”
God always hears! He is not deaf to your cries, He hears you and He sees you. He is in the business of rescuing, so if you feel like everyone around you is waging war against you, cry out to God and He will rescue you. And that is a guarantee my friend!
The word of God is your weapon against the lies of the enemy. When you are sad, the devil will do whatever he can to keep you in that state of sadness. Just know that that won’t be your portion in the mighty name of Jesus! You are not alone, you are not rejected. You are loved and wanted by God! Don’t stay in your sadness. Meditate on these scriptures daily, spend time in prayer with God, and see the Lord turn your mourning into rejoicing!
“All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.” (2 Timothy 3:16-17)
